About Somnath Temple: The First Jyotirlinga

Somnath Temple is situated on the sacred coast of Prabhas Patan in Gir Somnath, Gujarat. It holds the highest reverence in Hindu pilgrimage as the first among the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Widely known as 'The Shrine Eternal', the temple represents incredible resilience, having been rebuilt multiple times throughout history.

The modern temple structure was rebuilt in 1951 in the Kailash Mahameru Prasad architecture style under the guidance of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Millions of devotees visit every year for darshan and spiritual solace.

The history of Somnath Temple spans ancient puranic legends, medieval invasions, and modern national revival:

• Ancient Origin: Scriptures state that Lord Chandra (Moon God) originally built the temple out of gold to seek freedom from Daksha Prajapati's curse.
• 1025 AD (Ghazni's Raid): Mahmud of Ghazni attacked and looted the temple. However, local Hindu rulers kept restoring its glory.
• Medieval Era: Rebuilt repeatedly by Solanki, Paramara, and Chudasama kings using yellow sandstone.
• 1951 AD (Modern Era): Reconstructed after India's independence and inaugurated by Dr. Rajendra Prasad.

Temple Architecture & Unique Features

Constructed in the Chalukya (Solanki) architectural style, the temple exhibits intricate stone carvings and relief work. The Shikhara soars to a height of 155 feet, topped with a 10-ton Kalash.

The temple complex features the famous Baan Stambha (Arrow Pillar). An inscription on the pillar states that there is no piece of land in a straight line between Somnath coast and Antarctica!
